Tense Material Heritage

Tense Material Heritage, designed by Piergiorgio and Michele Cazzaniga, is a tribute to an ancient craft tradition. The tabletop, available in natural or black painted oak finish, is handcrafted using a technique known as 'sgorbiatura' (wood hand carving). This technique involves carving the wood in an irregular manner to achieve a wavy effect and offer an intensely tactile experience. This meticulous process – which requires several hours of work for each table – completes a frame that embodies the technological and industrial innovation that enabled it to reach considerable dimensions.

Top/Structure

Steel legs with a 35x35 mm section and internal structural tie-rod. The 35 mm thick tabletop is a load-bearing composite board built with an internal frame consisting of either aluminium profile and polystyrene filler.
Natural or black-stained oak finish, transparent acrylic surface finish. Edges and legs covered with 3 mm thick solid wood. The table top is finished with a handmade process known as ‘sgorbiatura’ (gouging).

How it's made

In Tense Material Heritage, the wooden top is enhanced by a craftsmanship known as 'sgorbiatura', a manual carving technique that gives the surface a unique, irregular texture.

The 'sgorbiatura' technique gives the top an undulating surface, enhancing the sensory experience through an intense tactile component.

Made entirely by hand, the craftmanship of Tense Material Heritage recalls the timeless elegance of an ancient craft tradition.

Available in three heights and different sizes, up to a maximum length of 4 metres, Tense Material Heritage adapts to every need with versatility and elegance.

Specialised in industrial product design and interior architecture, Michele Cazzaniga attended the prestigious Politecnico di Milano, where he graduated in Industrial Design. Over the years, he has collaborated with renowned design firms, creating significant projects. Together with Piergiorgio Cazzaniga, with whom he has worked closely since 1999, he designed the 'Tense' table collection for MDF Italia, icons of essentiality and functionality.
